Holistic Healing through Harnessing the Power of Sound and Vibration
About Vibroacoustic Therapy
VIBROACOUSTIC SOUND THERAPY (deep cellular massage)
Gentle vibrations, felt through the specially-designed sound mat, soothe and repair the body at a cellular level, providing relief from muscle and joint pain and diseases and ailments of the organs and body systems (digestive, nervous, cardiovascular, respiratory, endocrine, immune, skeletal, reproductive, and renal), as well as providing mental relaxation, stress relief, inner peace, and balance. Vibroacoustic Sound Therapy helps heal the mind, body, and soul using music and soft vibration. It helps relieve pain, relax muscles, reduce tension, promote sleep, and improve the flow of energy in the body. It is sound you can feel. Think of it as trillions of little micro massage therapists giving each of the cells of your body a therapeutic massage!
Vibroacoustics is all about science and biology. We aren't going to go into great length to explain the technical aspects of it because we don't want to overwhelm you with a lot of confusing details, and honestly it isn't necessary to understand the mechanics behind it to appreciate that it works (you don't need to know how exactly electricity works to know when the switch is on your have power and when the switch is off you don't!). If you are the type of person who likes to understand how or why things work, there are lots of great articles online that go into much greater detail, or we have a bit more "science-y" stuff HERE for you.
Here is the shortened version...
Everything in your body is made up of cells. Virtually every cell in your body vibrates at its own specific and measurable frequency. While this isn't really the most technically accurate analogy, it is one of the easiest for people to understand: think of the collective cells of your body (heart, lungs, back muscles, etc.). like a radio station. When you are right on the radio station (ex. 98.9 FM), you hear crisp, clear, beautiful music. If you move the radio scanner to 98.7 FM or 99.0 FM, you will still be able to hear the music, but will have some static. Move the scanner further yet in either direction and you get more and more static until you can no longer hear any of the station you were listening to. In much the same way, the more "off station" an area of the body becomes, the more your health is affected. There are a number of things that can be either the cause of, or result of, your mind and body being off station...illness, disease, injury, stress.
Vibroacoustic Sound Therapy uses specially selected sound frequencies (i.e. sound waves), to penetrate to the deepest layers of your body, through bones, muscles, organs, and tissue, to get rid of the static and get you back on the right station again. Vibroacoustic Therapy can help naturally relieve stress, boost the immune system, realign the energies (aka chakras) of the body, and address numerous physical conditions to improve overall health and wellness.

It is recommended that all clients commit to a minimum of 8 sessions. Vibroacoustic Therapy is a gentle, subtle treatment. With some conditions one or two treatments can be quite effective, particularly if you are just seeking relaxation and/or realignment. However, more significant illnesses, diseases, and bodily trauma can require several sessions before results are achieved. You are changing your body at a cellular level, so you can't expect to completely repair your body immediately.
If you are interested in seeing all of the specific sessions available, HERE is a list. Otherwise, your practitioner will select the tracks for you based on the condition you wish to treat.

Who Can Benefit from Vibroacoustic Therapy?
A Sound Soul Resides in A Sound Mind and a Sound Body
There are a wide variety of conditions that can benefit from using Vibroacoustic Therapy. This is not an exhaustive list, but includes some conditions. Additionally, it can be used purely for relaxation or to enhance meditative practices.
Vibroacoustic Therapy has been safely used for decades without any significant adverse affects, and there are few risks associated with treatment. However, there are some contraindications that clients need to be aware of. Please read through this section carefully, as certain conditions may require you to cancel or re-schedule your appointment, or bring a note from your primary healthcare provider indicating you are able to receive treatment.
Unfortunately, you will not be able to use the vibration bed at all if any of the following are applicable to you:
Pacemaker or other serious cardiac condition (note: there are magnets in the transducers).
Recent psychosis (active or borderline).
Implants that may be affected by magnets.
Significant spinal injuries (or slipped or bulging disc).
A medical condition such as very low blood pressure, epilepsy, bleeding disorder, or deep vein thrombosis (blood clot).
History of blackouts, heart attacks, or seizures.
If any of the following are applicable to you, please reschedule your appointment to a time when you are feeling well again and/or have received written authorization from your primary healthcare provider:
Cold, the flu, ear/sinus/throat infection, open wounds, infectious skin disease, or any contagious illness, active infection, or communicable disease.
Pregnancy (regardless of term).
Under the influence of recreational drugs or alcohol.
Recent surgery or have suffered a significant injury.
Note: Parental accompaniment required for all children and teens under age 16. Children will not be treated without an initial consultation with a parent first, and appointments must be made via phone, as appointments for those under 16 are only accepted during certain times.
Warnings of Over-Exposure
Vibroacoustic Therapy is very safe, but like everything, too much of a good thing isn't always a good thing.
While it is not uncommon to feel some focal pain or other physical discomfort during or after treatment (especially with pain conditions such as fibromyalgia), this feeling should be minor and should pass quickly. While brief or mild symptoms may be a positive sign that your body is responding favourably to treatment, prolonged or more severe symptoms may be the result of over-exposure.
Symptoms of over-exposure may appear if the duration of your session was too long or the volume was too high. It may also result if a frequency was used that was not right for your particular body. In most cases you would need to be on the bed for more than a couple of hours in a session for over-exposure to occur, so it is extremely unlikely this will be an issue given that our sessions are only 30 and 60 minutes, but we want to be upfront about possible risks so you can make an educated decision about your health.
Over-exposure symptoms include:
*Cold sweats or dizziness.
*Unpleasant and/or strong heart activity.
*Increased muscular or other acute pain.
If these symptoms persist or become troublesome, please contact a healthcare provider and ensure all symptoms have resolved prior to trying another session. Please advise your service provider of any negative side effects you experienced during or after your treatment.
How to Prepare
Have a small meal before arriving, but ensure you leave at least 60 minutes before your session. You don't want to be uncomfortably full, nor do you want your tummy rumbling.
Avoid caffeine 4 hours prior to your session. Vibroacoustic Therapy is designed to promote relaxation, and caffeine can leave you jittery and/or less able to relax.
In order to keep our facilities comfortable and clean for all of our clients, we ask that you shower the day of your appointment and use deodorant/antiperspirant to prevent body odour. Any street clothing worn during your Vibroacoustic Therapy session must be clean and sanitary.
If you will be arriving after any activities where you will be sweating or getting dirty, we ask that you bring a change of clothes.
You will start by filling out a from that will guide your practitioner with selecting sound frequencies and music that are tailored to your specific needs.
In addition to providing information on what condition you are hoping to treat with Vibroacoustic Therapy, you will be asked to fill out a health form and waiver. It is important that you are honest and complete when filling out your health form, as even though Vibroacoustic Therapy is generally extremely safe, there are some conditions that will prevent you from participating in a session.
Your first session will begin with a brief orientation by your attendant. You will receive an introduction to Vibroacoustic Therapy, and will have an opportunity to discuss your goals with treatment as well as to ask any questions you may have.
It is recommended at this point to use the washroom prior to going into the sound room.
You will be taken to your private room for some final instructions.
The Sound Room
During your appointment you will remain completely clothed; you will only need to remove your shoes. Please ensure you wear comfortable clothes and that they are clean.
Your session will take place on a comfy mat (the mat is 5.5 inches thick, much like a massage table top).
When settled on the mat, you will be given headphones. You can choose to listen to soothing spa music, a guided meditation, or hypnotherapy session. Bring your own, or choose from the provided selections. Alternatively, if you prefer silence, you can bring ear plugs or purchase ones from us.
Your session will begin as soon as your attendant starts the music. You will begin to feel the gentle vibrations of the mat as you listen to the selected music.
You will then be left in your own private room to enjoy your Vibroacoustic session in solitude.
After approximately 20 minutes you should be feeling the relaxation response. Some people fall asleep, others reach a meditative state, many experience pain relief, and others just enjoy the pleasant sensations and the opportunity to relax.
The experience is different for everyone, and yours will be unique to you. It even varies for the same person from session to session, but most report feeling relaxed and well rested. Some people are able to completely turn off their thoughts, while others find they can't get their thoughts to stop. Try not to become frustrated if you can't get your mind to settle down. During your first session(s) it can take time to get your mind to relax. Conversely, you can use the time to think about things you are otherwise too distracted to focus on.
Some people with sports injuries or other pain may initially feel some discomfort, but as the body relaxes, this discomfort should disappear.
Some people leave feeling like it was no benefit at all, yet report being more focused afterwards and having the best sleep ever when they get home. So keep in mind that while you may not feel the immediate benefits, you may notice them more when your session is complete. The more sessions you have the more you will experience the benefits, as with most conditions relief may not be experienced until after a few sessions.
Try not to have any expectations about what you will experience. You need to have realistic goals and because the experience is so different for everyone, you could end up feeling disappointed if you don't have the experience you were expecting. Just relax and enjoy the moment!
Ending the Session
The length of session varies according to the condition being treated, but typically lasts anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes.
After your session is over, your practitioner will return to turn off the equipment.
It is recommended that after the session stops that you sit up and spend a couple of minutes orienting yourself before standing up. Some people can feel a little dizzy if they get up to fast so we want to make sure you are steady on your feet before standing.
Drink some water or decaffeinated tea to help hydrate.
Head home and expect to have a wonderful night's sleep!
"I decided to try it because I was desperate for some pain relief. I have been suffering horribly with hip pain and have had minimal improvement despite going to both massage and chiro over the last few weeks, and I hate taking pain meds. While I was laying on the bed it didn't really feel like it was doing much, as the vibration is so light. It was nice and relaxing listening to my music, and I almost fell asleep, but I was very skeptical that it was actually doing anything to help my hip. I was pleasantly surprised when I got home and that evening was the first time in weeks I didn't have to use a heating pad. My mobility increased and my pain was decreased for the next couple of days, but then the pain started coming back. I went for a second treatment and again got a couple of days of relief before the pain returned, but I found it was not as intense when it came back this time. I wish it worked faster, but I was warned that I may need a few treatments and at this point any relief I can get is better than none!"
"About a month before I was supposed to be leaving on my family vacation to Mexico, I came down with a bad cold. After I got over it I was left with a stupid lingering cough. I wasn't sick or contagious anymore, but I didn't want to be "that person" on the plane hacking my head off with everybody looking at me like I had the plague! I had heard that the vibrating bed might help, so I thought I would try. It was a little uncomfortable because it was a struggle for me to lay on my back without having a coughing fit, but I powered through. The vibration was subtle, but I swear I could feel the fluid in my lungs vibrating! I don't know what it did or how it did it, all I know is that the next day when I got on the plane, armed with a whole bag full of cough candies and throat lozenges, I didn't even need to use them because my uncontrollable hacking was gone. I still coughed on and off a bit for a few days after my visit, but I didn't feel like an elephant was standing on my chest and when I did cough it was just one or two little coughs, not a full blown coughing fit."
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Vibroacoustic Sound Therapy safe?
Unlike Vibroacoustic Disease (a completely different phenomena!), Vibroacoustic Therapy is one of the safest alternative therapies available today. It is non-invasive, drug-free, and because sound waves can reach the deep layers of muscle and connective tissue without the use of forceful pressure, you don't have to worry about the bruising, pain, and tenderness that often comes with a deep tissue massage.
Are there any age restrictions?
Vibroacoustic Therapy provides relief and healing for people of all ages. However, because the therapy does involve lying quietly for at least 30 minutes, it may not be appropriate for younger children. Appointments for those younger than 16 years are only accepted at certain times and only with prior consultation with a parent, so appointments for anyone under 16 years old must be booked via phone.
How often do I need a treatment/How many treatments do I need?
Like other mainstream and alternative health treatments, frequency and duration will vary depending on the condition and the individual being treated. While many clients report a significant improvement after just one to three sessions, for lasting symptom relief the best results are achieved with cumulative sessions of once or twice a week for 8 weeks. However, more chronic conditions may require 2-3 sessions per week and may take 10-12 weeks to show signs of improvement. Once desired results are achieved, clients can drop back to a maintenance schedule which is less frequent, but since it offers so many other benefits many people enjoy doing it regularly even after their initial complaint has been addressed!
I don't feel much/anything. Is it working?
Vibroacoustic Therapy is subtle. Unlike other hands-on treatments administered by a touch-practitioner, such as massage or reflexology, Vibroacoustic Therapy works on a cellular level. Depending on the area of the body and the corresponding frequency, the sensation you feel may range from barely noticeable to a mild vibration sensation. However, even though you don't feel your teeth rattling, rest assured it is working!
What do I wear?
You want to feel comfortable, so it is best to wear loose-fitting, comfy clothes that you can relax in. Everyone is different with what they feel to be a comfortable temperature, so it is recommended that you layer (ex. a t-shirt with a hoodie or sweater). That way, if you are too warm you can take off a layer and if you are too cool you can add a layer. There is a blanket to use as well. Whatever you choose to wear, please ensure it is clean.
